SNAPSHOT: Sugar Bowl

April 2, 2013 By Bryon Dorr 8 Comments

The amaing view of Donner lake on the drive up to Sugar Bowl from Truckee.

Sugar Bowl is a spectacular mountain resort that often times gets overshadowed by its neighbors, like Squaw Valley. Some of my favorite runs can be found under Mt Lincoln chair. In one run you can rip groomers, pound fresh in the trees, huck cliffs, enjoy open fresh pow fields, slash some crazy rock outcroppings and jib all sorts of stuff. Seriously, all in one trip down the mountain! Sugar Bowl also has an open boundary policy and is well-known for its “lake run.” If you’re looking for spectacular views, short lift lines, great snow and serious terrain you have come to the right place!

Amazing views and backcountry lines off he backside of the resort.

Tips:

-The Drunken Monkey restaurant just outside Truckee is probably some of the best Sushi and noodles you can get outside of Japan. You will not be disappointed!

-If you want amazing food, quality drinks and spectacular views of Truckee you have to go to the Cottonwood Restaurant. While it is not remotely cheap, it is well worth the visit, even if you just get a drink and appetizer in the bar area.

–Sierra Snowkite Center is new and just down the road from Sugar Bowl. Although I didn’t get there on this trip, it is VERY high on my to do list. Looks soooo fun!

Some super challenging and unique terrain, with amazing views, can be had off the top of Summit Chair.

It had been a few days since the fresh snow had hit the ground on my visit to Sugar Bowl, but there where still fresh tracks to be found. I was amazed to find fresh lines within view of chair lifts and how easy it was to find fresh stashes in the trees. I look forward to getting back to Sugar Bowl and experiencing the spectacular terrain with deep pow. There are some amazing cliffs and rocks that I really want to huck myself off of, when there is deep snow to catch me:) -Bryon Dorr
