SNAPSHOT: DC iPhone Photo Running Safari

September 6, 2012 By Bryon Dorr 5 Comments

Basic Route: Rosslyn, Arlington National Cemetary, Around Tidal Basin, Loop around entire National Mall, Back across Potomac to car.

I was born in DC many years ago and have always loved exploring the city whenever I get the chance. I’ve got many crazy memories from DC including seeing the National Zoo Pandas when I was a child, warehouse raves in my college yrs, first dates at Union Station and even getting my car broken into in one sketch area of town. On this September morning I found myself dropping my parents off at Regan National Airport and in need of some running miles. I quickly hatched a plan to visit my grandfathers grave at Arlington National Cemetary, take in the sites around downtown DC, get some practice taking iPhone photos and getting in some running miles. I ended up “running” 11.64 miles in about 4hrs 10min. The weather was unbearably humid (77 degrees and 89% humidity) and in the end my body just didn’t want to work. The workouts and long bike ride in the days leading up to this DC adventure also didn’t leave my legs in very good shape to go fast. Once I realized it was going to be slow going I settled in and tried to enjoy the sites, take more pics and finish the route I had set out for myself. In the end it was a really fun way to take in a lot of sites quickly. I’m sure I’ll be using this running photo safari technique to explore many more cities around the globe. Enjoy the collection of better photos that I took on this adventure below, all taken with my iPhone 4.

(On many of my adventures these days I’m doing quite a bit of product testing for future reviews on Exploring Elements. On this adventure I was testing out the LifeProof waterproof iPhone case and the new Camelback Ultra LR running vest. The LifeProof case has some quirks for sure, but I haven’t yet found a better everyday case that is fully waterproof. The Ultra LR hydration vest is well thought out, but I’m not a huge fan of lumbar style carrying systems for running. This was my first outing with this vest and I’m still trying to get it fit properly to my torso. Full waterproof iPhone case and running hydration vest comparison reviews are in the works.)
