REVIEW: Precipice (Book)

August 21, 2013 By Bryon Dorr 1 Comment

Precipice is a book of suspense and action. I picked up this book assuming it would only be about adventures in a kayak, as that is what the author of the book, Leland Davis, is known for, and how I know him. I couldn’t have been more wrong! Yes there are moments of extreme whitewater kayak action, but they are only means to another end, and a different kind of adventure all together. If you are a paddler you will relate intimately to many of the locations and scenes in the book, while non-paddlers will fully enjoy these locations for the first time. You could call this book a spy thriller. It paints vivid, and sometimes gruesome, images of tense moments; from the seat of a kayak, from behind a gun, from a Senators plush leather chair and even from a deer stand in the backwoods of Alabama.

Much of the book takes place in Mexico, and paints a pretty gruesome picture of the beautiful country. While it is obviously written through the eyes of someone that has intimate experience in the region it should also be noted that this is a work of fiction. Many of the beautiful sights and sounds of Mexico are eloquently conveyed in the book, while the intense violence and darker side of the region are also fully explored. While Mexico has a pretty dark reputation I have personally found it to be an amazing welcoming place full of interesting good-hearted people. (How Safe is Mexico?) I highly recommend travel and adventure in Mexico, and will be going back there myself soon.

Precipice brings you to the brink and back again, pun intended. I had an extremely hard time putting down this book once I got started, and fully related to the concepts of human purpose as well as the meaning of death explored in the book. If you’re a paddler, you’re probably already familiar with Leland’s writing and won’t be disappointed by the familiar themes and places explored in the book. If your not a paddler, but enjoy adventure and the fine line between life and death that we all walk everyday you are going to want to read this book. Get your copy of Precipice today.
