REVIEW: Hillsound Trail Crampon Ultra

January 22, 2014 By Bryon Dorr 1 Comment

Hillsound Trail Crampon Ultra

HillSoundCramponReview 1Fast & light is the name of the game with the performance oriented Hillsound Trail Crampon Ultra. These little guys are SUPER easy to put on and remove, provide incredible traction on ice and snow, are extremely light weight and seem like they will hold up for many days of use and abuse. I put these crampons to the test during a recent outdoor winter photo shoot and they didn’t disappoint. They fit well, stayed in place, provided great traction and were light enough that I barely noticed that they were on my feet. I’m looking forward to more wintery conditions where I can get these crampons out on some trail runs and really use them to their full potential.HillSoundCramponReview 2MSRP: $69.99 (BUY NOW)

HillSoundCramponReview 3Hillsound is a company based out of Vancouver, BC and is known for making a wide range of high quality crampons and gaiters. Their products are built on the principle of accessible innovation, meaning they strive to make products that improve performance while still being affordable. Their “Forged for Alpinism” slogan really explains what this company is all about.HillSoundCramponReview 4The Trail Crampon Ultra packs down into a durable carrying case, which is included with the crampons. This little case keeps the spikes from wearing and/or puncturing your gear while in transit.HillSoundCramponReview 5I’m not sure these crampons could be any easier to put on or take off. You just need to slip the front of your shoe into the crampon, pull the tab over the heal and then fasten the velcro strap across the top of the shoe, after looping it around the rubber on the opposite side. My first time using these I just pulled them out of the package and slipped them on. Super intuitive and simple!HillSoundCramponReview 6To take them off you just pull on the tab on the heal and slip them off over the toes. Doesn’t get much easier than that!HillSoundCramponReview 7The velcro tab across the top makes sure the crampons stay in place when descending steep hills, side slopes or pounding out those winter training runs.HillSoundCramponReview 8The Trail Crampon Ultra features 18 stainless steel spikes that are strategically placed to provide amazing traction on all winter surfaces. While the traction is superb, you also get VERY little drag from this spike design as they cleanly enter and exit the ice/snow.HillSoundCramponReview 9Durability is built right into these crampons. You get high strength stainless steel construction throughout and welded chains that keep the traction spikes where they’re supposed to be, while also supplying complete underfoot traction.HillSoundCramponReview 10Don’t let a little snow and ice keep you from exploring the great outdoors. Get outside and make your own tracks with the new Hillsound Trail Crampon Ultra!
