Flying Off Everest

(BUY NOW)

This is author Dave Costello’s first book which traces the journey, and lives, of two Nepalese men, Babu and Lakpa, who became the 2012 National Geographic Adventurers of the Year for their spectacular journey from THE summit to the sea. They climbed Everest, paraglided from its summit and kayaked to the sea. Each of these accomplishments in themselves are epic adventures, but combined they are the “Ultimate Descent.”

FlyingOffEverest 1Lakpa is an experienced Sherpa on Everest, had little experience with paragliding, zero in a kayak and didn’t even know how to swim. Babu, on the other hand, was an expert whitewater kayaker and experienced paragliding pilot, but only had basic mountaineering skills and hadn’t faired well at altitude in the past. This pair combined their skills and passion for adventure to pull off a truly spectacular feat, with very little in the way of planning, preparation, money, sponsors or support.

The novel is an in-depth and thoughtful look at culture and adventure in Nepal. While it can feel a bit tedious and repetitive at times, Costello thoroughly educates the reader, allowing for full immersion in the truly amazing tale that he weaves. This book will educate even a seasoned adventurer, and should inspire even the most un-seasoned. Flying Off Everest presents the facts, from as many angles as possible, while painting a vivid story of one of the most spectacular adventures of our time.

FlyingOffEverest 3Flying Off Everest is a tale of determination, perseverance and listening to those crazy ideas in your head. This book should leave you thinking that any adventure you can dream up is truly possible. Don’t let “life” get in the way of following your dreams. Follow those dreams for you, not for financial gain or recognition from others. Babu, Lakpa and Costello wouldn’t have it any other way.

(Disclaimer: Dave Costello provided a copy of Flying Off Everest to Exploring Elements for review consideration.)
