NEW GEAR: Overland Expo 2017

May 26, 2017 By Bryon Dorr 2 Comments

There was so much cool new gear on display at Overland Expo 2017 in Flagstaff, AZ. Below are some of the cool new pieces that caught my eye from around the show. What new gear caught your eye, or is on your wish list?

Be sure to check out ALL the awesome from Overland Expo West 2017 HERE.

NorWeld Full-Size Tray/Canopy System

Mainline Overland has introduced the quality NorWeld Australia tray back and canopy system to the American market, and just debuted their first full size American truck tray/canopy system. The canopy is cavernous and gobbles up more gear than you should probably be carrying, and is quickly removable in order to keep the utility of the flatbed truck tray. The Tray runs a bit over $13K dollars and the canopy system is another $8-13K, depending on the size and models you order. Durability, lightweight and quality isn’t inexpensive!

Tembo Tusk Adventure Skottle Grill

The soon to be released Adventure Skottle is squarely aimed at the adventure moto crowd. The 12″ round by 12″ tall grill packs down to only 2″ thick. It is designed to work with the MSR Dragonfly camp stove as the burner and fit in a small day pack or motorcycle pannier. It will be available mid summer and come with a carry bag. Weight and price TBA.

Mosko Moto Fatty Tool Roll

The new Mosko Moto Fatty Tool Roll brings an all-new level of style and function to your adventure moto tool kit. It features a welded seam waterproof cover and lots or organizing pockets. The external grab handle is perfect for vertical packing in a pannier, like the front outside pockets on the Backcountry 35L Pannier. The bag is so versatile it would also make a great addition to any 4-wheeled vehicle tool kit as well. It will be available very soon and be priced at $69.99.

TacRider Atlas Bar

The Atlas Bar is an American made extendable tool designed to help you right your adventure motorcycle when you crash or fall over, which is an inevitable situation if you ride off road regularly. The bar weighs in at 5lbs 3oz, through the use of an aluminum shaft and steel joints, and extends up to 53″ long. It collapses all the way down to 16.75″ for transport, with the bit on the end removed. At $225 it isn’t inexpensive, but is one of those tools that you might really wish you had when you find yourself on the ground in the middle of nowhere alone with your heavy adventure motorcycle lying on the ground.

EarthCruiser GZL Campers

This impressive Euro style composite overland style truck camper is now made in Bend, OR, and offered in three configurations; The GZL 300 for mid size pickups, the GZL 400 for ½ ton pickups and the GZL 500 for flatbed pickups. Besides loads of high-end durable camper systems, the GZL series is also incredibly light weight, ranging from 700 to 800 lbs. EarthCruiser is offering some impressive introductory pricing, so order now. Regular retail on these campers is from $36-49K.

Cummins R2.8 Turbo Diesel Crate Motor

The Cummins 2.8L turbo diesel is now available as a crate motor to put into your next vehicle build, or to replace that blown motor in your beloved overland adventure mobile. The motor puts out 161 hp and 267 lb/ft of torque, and weighs in at 503 lbs. New Legend 4×4 was able to snag beta engine #1, pictured above, and put it in a Scout 800 body on a new JK frame. This engine is going to be a great option for many people with old Land Rovers, Land Cruisers, Jeeps, etc…

Blue Ridge Overland Air Tools Bag

This new bag from Blue Ridge Overland is American made and specifically designed to hold all your off road air tool and tire repair gear.  It holds an ARB Tire Repair Kit on the outside while offering up pockets and room inside for all your inflator and deflator tools and air hoses. A durable, purposeful and useful little bag at $69.99.

Tepui Zip Off Canopy System

All Tepui tents now offer fully removable tent canopies. The canopy can now be zipped off and replaced, repaired or switched out for a different style canopy that is better suited to the conditions you might be traveling in on your next adventure. The canopies will be on offer from $300-500, once you buy a tent base system.

Shelter Werks MPS-1

The MPS-1 is an American made 3 lb 5052 aluminum shovel with a solid 6061 T-handle. The handle is designed to be used as a hammer, the side of the shovel blade is designed to saw and the blade has enough of an edge on it to chop. The small cutout in the blade is both a bottle opener and security point for mounting the shovel. Impressive $95 lightweight multitool that would be at home on any quality overland adventuremobile.

Fold-A-Flame Grill

The Fold a Flame is a small mild steel cooking and fire pit setup. It is offered in 2 sizes, with the smaller one being 11.5″ x 15.5″, weighing 19 lbs and costing $169. While not lightweight or inexpensive, this little fire pit should hold up to years of use.
