EVENT: 2014 Santa Cruz Paddle Surf Festival

April 12, 2014 By Bryon Dorr 1 Comment

The Santa Cruz Paddle Surf Festival is truly a highlight of my travel schedule every year! I love getting together with the kayak surf tribe and surfing the spectacular waves at Steamer’s Lane with a few good friends. This year I hadn’t been in my surf kayak for something like 10 months before the comp, so with only about an hr of practice the day before the comp I managed to do myself proud. I even managed the highest IC score of the first day of competition, but in the end was 8 in IC and 9 in HP. For the skinny on all the happenings from this year’s event check out the story I wrote for C&K Magazine with interviews I did with Edu Etxeberria, Matthew Hoff and Kate Duncan. Also have a look at some more photos below that didn’t make the C&K articles.

I really wanted to do well in my HP heats and did what I could to shred the waves I was given by mother ocean. (Photo: Mark Boyd)

Huge thank you to Buck Johnson for the loaner IC boat. This exact boat was piloted by Buck to a world championship, and got me the highest IC score on day 1 of the comp. (Photo: Mark Boyd)

Love the shadow on the wave! (Photo: Mark Boyd)

I think Vince Shay was pretty stoked on his new Murky Waters Phonix kayak, his design and the boat’s debut.
EESCPF14 2
Boat checkin is always a good time to catch up with friends.
EESCPF14 3 (1)
The very “serious” competitors meeting on Thur. night before the comp.
EESCPF14 4 (1)
Kate Duncan is a wave surfing machine, no matter the surf craft.
EESCPF14 5
On Saturday the high tide, lower swell and wind forced competitors to surf REALLY close to the cliffs.
EESCPF14 6
The rescue crew was hard at work all weekend. I think I counted 4 swims and 3 broken boats.
EESCPF14 7
I love when Pelicans surf the air currents off the waves at Steamers Lane 🙂
EESCPF14 8
Edu from Basque country showed off explosive surfing.
EESCPF14 9
Matt Hoff showed everyone how the locals shred all weekend.
EESCPF14 10
Dave Boehne from Infinity Surf always puts on a spectacular show.
EESCPF14 11
Hawian style SUP air in Santa Cruz.
EESCPF14 12
The SUPers also had plenty of spectacular crashes.
EESCPF14 13
Probably the most badass dropin of the whole comp. Green jersey came from the left of the other two riders to paddle around them and drop into one of the best waves of the heat.
EESCPF14 14
Wildlife is abundant everywhere in Santa Cruz, you just have to keep an eye out.
EESCPF14 15
My awesome chariot provided by XPCamper, since my new adventuremobile the EEXP is still being built.
