BFG KM3: Terrain Takeover On The Rubicon

June 19, 2018 By Bryon Dorr Leave a Comment

Life is all about experiences. The BFGoodrich KM3 tire launch is one of those experiences that I won’t soon forget! It involved an impressive new tire, exceptional people, the Rubicon Trail, Ultra 4 race vehicles, RZRs, helicopters and SO much more.

BFG Mud-Terrain T/A KM3

Lets first talk tires. BFG has been making off road specific mud-terrain tires since 1980. The new BFG KM3 is the 5th generation of this tire. The BFG KM2 is a highly regarded off road DOT approved tire. The KM3 is better!

The KM3 offers more grip in the mud (5% more), more grip on the rocks (8% more) and is much more durable. The KM3’s sidewalls are a full 27% stronger than the KM2. I also noticed that the KM3 is extremely quite on the road, which is unlike most mud-terrains, and my previous experiences with the KM2.

The KM3 is just hitting tire stores near you this month (June 2018). It will be offered in 54 different sizes, ranging from 30” to 39”, to fit 15”-18”, 20” and 22” wheels. Whether you have a UTV, Jeep, light truck or just about every off road vehicle in between, you should be able to find a KM3 for your vehicle.

Over two days I was able to drive on the KM3 on pavement, crushed gravel, smooth granite, sharp rocks and through mucky water. Most of that drive time was on the infamous Rubicon Trail.

While we only traversed a bit over 4 miles of the 22 mile Rubicon, we did get a solid taste of what the trail is all about. I’m stoked to get a taste of this amazing off road route, as the Rubicon is on all off road enthusiasts bucket list. I will be back, and I will traverse the entire trail.

During the lunch stop on the trail we were also treated to a ride along in an Ultra 4 race vehicle. These 700+ hp monsters can drive up and over nearly anything in their path, and do so at speed. The capability of these machines is truly mind bending, and can’t be fully understood without experiencing it first hand. A big shout out to Randy Slawson, two-time King of the Hammers winner, for an absolutely incredible ride! While I was thrilled, he was taking a chill drive in the woods, only using one hand on the wheel most of the time.

Near the end of the day I also got a ride along in a new Polaris RZR XP Turbo S. These things are FAST and have incredible suspension, eating up nearly 3’ berms like nothing was there. While I didn’t get to drive, I did have one of the best pilots on the planet. My driver was 13 time overall Baja 1000 Champion and general off road racing badass Larry Roeseler. Super nice guy with insanely smooth and fast off road driving skills.

Did I mention helicopters? Yep, I got to commute to and from the Rubicon from the fancy Resort at Squaw Creek by way of helicopter. It was only an 8-minute flight, which would have taken many hours to travel by land. Nothing to do with tires, but man helicopters are cool!

The BFG Off Road Family

I was truly amazed at how long many of the BFG employees had been with the company. It seems, especially with the off road tire products, that BFG has build a great culture around the brand that has retained employees and enthusiasts alike.

There were also very few journalist invited to this tire launch, as BFG focused more on influencers from all walks of life. Instead of traditional media, BFG threw a massive net over the digital social sphere. I was rubbing elbows with Olympic gold medalists, off road racing legends, Jeep enthusiasts, reality TV stars, rally racing super heros and so many others throughout the event.

A cherry on top of this whole tire launch for BFG has to be the fact that they didn’t have a single tire puncture throughout the event. That is impressive, considering the variety of people driving the vehicles on some serious terrain!

BFG even had hot chocolate chip cookies for us at the end of the trail, courtesy of the Black Forest engine heater tray.

If you’re in the market for a proper off road tire that can handle a wide range of conditions, and treat you right on the pavement, the new BFG KM3 is worth considering.
