2013 Vail Winter Mtn Games: A Photogs Perspective

March 7, 2013 By Bryon Dorr 9 Comments

This was my first year attending the Winter Vail Mtn Games, although I have been to many Summer Vail Mtn Games. Check out my coverage from last summer HERE. The Winter Games have a very similar format, but a very different vibe. The days are full of athletic outdoor events that showcase the rugged terrain around the town of Vail and the nights are full of parties that feature live music. The Winter Games are unique in that they feature very niche winter outdoor sports with a very core dedicated followings. The town of Vail is also full of winter sports enthusiasts that are out playing on the slopes, versus the summer time in Vail where there are far fewer tourists and a big contingent of competitors and spectators that arrive specifically for the Games. In the end the Winter Games were a ton of fun to explore, photograph and be a part of. The athletes put on a spectacular show!

I’d like to send a huge shout out to Matt Trappe for being a rock star photographer and showing me a few things about the profession. Check out his photos from the Games HERE. Also be sure to check out the shots from a few other talented photographers that I met at the Games: Steven Dewitt, Daniel Milchev & David Clifford.

I was able to cover most of the events during the games, although I did miss a few at the Nordic center and the opening night concert. Hopefully you get a feel for the Games from my photos and want to join in on the fun next year. I hope to see you there!

Lots of quality fun sculptures around Vail village.
High line slackline demo over Gore Creek. These guys have skills!
Quality toons are a big part of the Mtn Games.
Trick line slackline demo. Mickey Wilson showing off control and balance.
Mickey Wilson does love to back flip!
Steezy style on the slackline.
Always looking for fun angles of the action:)
Best trick bike practice. These guys roll down a plywood runnway, hit a ramp and have to land on snow!
Best trick bike finals was on FIRE!
Gotta love people trying to get that unique GoPro angle:)
Great shot Matt Trappe took of me helping this kid fix his tacoed rim during the big air Mtn Bike finals. He got it to spin again, but the speed wobble was crazy!
Telemark big air practice.
Ummm, it helps to have 2 skis on your feet when you need to land.
The Tele guys go HUGE!
Yes, these dudes are on tele skis!
Showing off for the crowd with lots of skiers hitting the ramp blue angle syle.
The on-snow mtn bike crit was so fun to watch. All style of mtn bikes tackled this hilly and fast course.
Concentration was key not to wipe out, although most did anyway:)
This dude flew threw the course on a stock downhill bike.
Vail Uphill start. Skis, snowshoes, trail shoes and shoes with traction deviecs. Didn’t matter, just go up hill as fast as possible.
Running fast on snow EARLY in the morning for the uphill challenge.
Even the pups challenged the mtn.
The snow shoe race was fast and furious as the sun set.
The Ski Mountaineering race was pretty awesome to watch. Never done it, but might have to next year. Skilled endurance athletes for sure!
Boot packing up a big hill on the Ski Mo course with a smile:)
Time to go down hill again.
Ski Mo course ended with a slalom course.
Mixed/Ice Climbing is pretty sweet. These guys where even forced to to 3 mandatory inverted moves. Contrived yes, awesome for sure!
The Games finished up with the Dual Slalom Bike and was tons of fun to watch.
Intensity in the dual mtn bike slalom. Don’t look at the camera dude you gotta go downhill fast here in a sec!
Besides the gate the dual slalom competitors also had whoops and a jump to content with.
The concerts where well attended and always a highlight at the Mtn Games. The Flowbots killed it on the Bud Light stage Fri night.
Eddie Bauer stepped up big filling the void left by TEVA pulling out as the title sponsor of the Games.
Ski at Vail is pretty awesome. I snuck in a 1/2 day at the end of the games.
