EVENT: NW Overland Rally 2019

July 29, 2019 By Bryon Dorr Leave a Comment

Big crowds and another record year!

2019 marks the ninth year of the NW Overland Rally, and yet another record year in all the good ways. I once again had the honor of being the field manager at the event, which means I got to work hard for a week and help create the magic that makes this event run smoothly and remain community focused.

My GX 460 isn’t set up for sleeping, yet, so my MSR Tent was home for the week.

With record attendance and vendors this year there was always something to do. The best parts as usual for me were catching up with so many truly amazing people who are passionate about vehicle based travel. The classes, talks and demonstrations throughout the long weekend were also world class, as they always are at this event. No matter your experience level there is always lots more to learn.

Got to see the EEXP, now known as the “Dodgemahal,” for the first time since I sold it. It is living the good life and traveling a ton with Phil of Down 2 Mob.

Of course there was also an insane wide variety of jaw dropping overland vehicles to drool upon as well. Even if you don’t care about the cool rigs, there was plenty of cool gear to put on, in and under your own vehicle.

There are really great people behind this event. Ray and Marianne Hyland & Mario and Ann Donovan are the ones who make this gathering such a success each year.

I’ll let these images do the talking, and guide you through all the awesome that was the 2019 NW Overland Rally. If you haven’t made it to this event be sure to mark it on your calendar now. It is one not to be missed! Hopefully see you at the 10th anniversary NWOR next summer!

Always good to see so many great vendors in the industry. Step 22 Gear is always one to watch for cool new quality products.
After helping run the event, and attending, for so many years now I’ve been able to connect with so many awesome people in this industry.
You can always count on Jerry at Tembo Tusk to serve up some tasty morsels.
A VERY well attended program was Juniper Overland’s make your own Bloody Mary.
The Old Mill Cafe was serving up tasty goods across the street and from their food truck on site. Mmm… maple cinnamon bun.
Lots of cool new builds made their public debuts at the show, like Adventure Ready’s “Peggy Sue” Superduty flatbed camper setup.
Mule Expedition Outfitters “Baja Runner” AEV RAM flatbed camper build also made its debut.
Yep, a proper 4WD Sprinter on 37s. Iglhaut Allrad takes the Sprinter to a new stratosphere.
The Nitro Gear Troopy is my dream vehicle.
Very cool Isuzu Trooper setup for adventure.
Still one of the coolest overland campers out there. This little 40 comes nearly every year.
That one time when you thought; “A missile carrier would make a perfect overland camper!”
The 7P 4×4 training crew did an amazing job as usual.
BIG crowds on the off road training course, especially the self drive programs.
Winch classes with Three Amigos Off Road Training.
Tire Repair with Off-Road Safety Academy.
Vehicle preparation with AT Overland Equipment.
Compass Nav with the Rebelles.
Kids wilderness survival classes with Veteran Overland.
Kids photography lessons with JackDaw.Love.
Women Overlanding The World inspiring everyone to get out and explore.
The Warn/Crankshaft Culture Wine tasting is always an event highlight for many.
The Mule Expedition Outfitters Overland Game Show is all kinds of good fun.
There are always great happy hours at the rally. My personal favorite has to be the one with Ninkasi beer, which this year was put on by SherpTek and Hellwig.
The Overland Chef Competition is always an impressive spectacle.
BIG crowds for the nightly talks and raffles!
Dan Grec, from The Road Chose Me, regaled us from tales of life on the road in Africa. He just got back from a 3-year circumnavigation of the continent in his Jeep. Consider picking up one of his books, as he has some stories to tell!
The Overland Challenge on Sunday morning is always one of my favorite events of the weekend. This year it was a “Team Embarrassing Wetness Challenge.” You’ll have to talk to participants and/or show up next year to find out what that’s all about.
